At Savanna Drilling, The Driller is responsible for operating the controls of the drilling rig machinery and equipment to extract oil and or natural gas from underground reservoirs. This position is responsible for the supervision and safety of the rig crew, ensuring the operation and tasks are performed safely and efficiently, in accordance with company/contractor policy and procedures and industry requirements.
Supervision Received:
The Driller reports to and receives supervision from the Rig Manager.
Supervision Exercised:
The Driller is responsible for supervising the rig crew.
Summary of Duties (Duties may include, but are not limited to the following):
Equipment Operation
- Operate the drilling rig and associated equipment (hoisting equipment, mud pump(s), electrical generator and HPU equipment) according to established procedures and safety guidelines.
- Monitor drilling progress, equipment performance, and well parameters to ensure optimal operation and productivity.
- Adjust drilling techniques and equipment setting as necessary to overcome challenges and maximize efficiency.
- Conduct routine maintenance and inspections on drilling equipment to ensure proper functioning and prevent breakdowns.
- Identify and troubleshoot mechanical issues and perform repairs or adjustments as needed to minimize downtime.
- Communicate effectively with engineers, geologists, and the client consultants to relay information, address concerns, and make decisions regarding drilling procedures.
Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to safety protocols and regulatory requirements to prevent accidents, injuries and environmental damage. Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures outlined by Savanna Drilling, government agencies and customers, as required.
- Ensures all employees wear and utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the task being performed;
- Conduct and supervise safety meetings/SOP reviews, drills and training sessions as per company policy.
- Conduct pre-operation safety checks on equipment and maintain a clean and organized work area to minimize hazards.
- Perform hazard assessments with the crew, documenting and submitting corresponding corrective action taken.
- Complete inspections each tour along with completing daily, weekly, and monthly meetings and rig inspections with their crew.
- Participate and assist management in the investigation of all HSE related incidents.
- Promote a culture of safety by being knowledgeable on Savanna’s HSE Program and initiatives, and actively practicing adherence to HSE policy, procedures and practices. Follow company and industry recommended best practices, industry directives and legislative requirements.
Personnel Supervision
- Coordinate and assign tasks based on worker competency, providing guidance training and support.
- Supervise the rig crew activities, ensuring crew members are performing the task within policy, procedures and best practices.
- Assist in worksite orientations and supervision of service personnel and visitors.
- Provide guidance and training to new and less experienced workers, promoting skill development and teamwork.
- Ensure that crew members are trained in the safe performance of their duties prior to assignment.
Reporting and Documentation
- Keep detailed records of drilling activities, including depth drilled, formations encountered, and equipment usage.
- Prepare daily reports and logs documenting drilling progress, safety incidents, and equipment malfunctions.
- Provide timely updates and feedback to the rig manager regarding operational status and challenges.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance activities, equipment performance, and operational parameters.
- Ensures that all necessary documentation is completed in an accurate and timely manner.
- Prepare and submit standard reports and documentation required by various functions, including, HSE, Maintenance and Operations.
- Ensure operational and safety required documentation is posted on bulletin board in the doghouse.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Education and Experience:
- Must have valid H2S Alive ticket, Standard First Aid ticket, CSO, Confined Space Rescue ticket, Loader Training, Fall Protection ticket, Rig Rescue ticket, Detect & Control of Flammable Substances ticket, Boiler Ticket, and Well Control ticket.
- Relevant experience of field work in the oilfield services industry. Previous experience must include supervisory responsibility.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to drilling operations.
