CAOEC responds to announced agreement on carbon pricing
For Immediate Release: May 15, 2026 The Canadian Association of Energy Contractors (CAOEC) is encouraged by the progress that has been made over the past 12 months to make Canada an energy superpower. While we appreciate the Alberta and federal governments' ongoing work together to provide policy certainty for energy investment decisions and to enable growth, an agreement to increase the industrial carbon price risks slowing that momentum at a time when global demand for responsibly produced Canadian energy continues to grow. For Canada's drilling rig and service rig sector, such rising costs can directly impact investment decisions, reducing rig activity and impacting the jobs and economic opportunities our industry creates in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Canada's drilling rigs and service rigs support more than 80,000 direct and indirect jobs across the country, and provide mortgage-paying, family-sustaining jobs and the essential services that keep Canada's energy industry moving forward. CAOEC will continue to work with governments and advocate for policy decisions that ensure Canada can meet growing global demand while protecting jobs, affordability, and economic growth here at home. -30- About CAOEC The Canadian Association of Energy Contractors (CAOEC) represents 92 member companies, including 20 land drilling, 64 service rig, and 8 oil sands mine drilling members — nearly 100% of the industry, on the front lines of energy security and the creation of energy abundance. They operate a fleet of 336 land-based drilling rigs and 668 service rigs across Saskatchewan, northeast British Columbia, Alberta, southwest Manitoba, Ontario, and offshore operations off Newfoundland, along with specialized oil sands mine drilling rigs that operate exclusively in Alberta's oil sands region. CAOEC's members are varied and diverse, and include many small- and medium-sized enterprises that have been leaders in creating opportunities for young people, Indigenous communities, and middle-class workers.
